SEO in Zambia: how to get your business to the top of Google

Search Google for almost any service “in Lusaka” or “in Zambia” and look at what comes up. Very often the top results are directories, freelancer marketplaces and Facebook pages, not the businesses themselves.

That’s the opportunity. In a market where many competitors haven’t done the basics, a business that does SEO properly can reach the top of Google faster than it could in Johannesburg or Nairobi. Here’s how.

1. Start with Google Business Profile (it’s free)

When someone searches “printing company near me” or “dentist Lusaka”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any websites. Those three come from Google Business Profile.

To give yourself the best chance of appearing there:

  • Claim and verify your profile at google.com/business.
  • Use your exact business name, not a list of keywords.
  • Choose the most accurate primary category (for example “Marketing agency” or “Dental clinic”), then add secondary ones.
  • Add your address, phone, WhatsApp-friendly number, hours and website.
  • Upload real photos of your premises, team and work, and keep adding them.
  • Post updates and offers regularly.

Your name, address and phone number must match exactly everywhere they appear: your website, Facebook page, LinkedIn and directories. Small differences such as “Plot 18” on one listing and “18” on another confuse Google.

2. Get Google reviews and reply to every one

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking factors, and they’re what customers read before they call. Make asking a habit:

  • Send a short review link on WhatsApp after every completed job.
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and quickly.
  • Never buy reviews or post fake ones. Google removes them and can suspend your profile.

People in Zambia often search with a place name (“car hire Livingstone”, “web design Lusaka”) or with “near me”. Build your website around those searches:

  • Give each service its own page with a clear title, for example “Car Hire in Lusaka | Your Company”.
  • Mention the towns and areas you serve naturally in the text, but only where you really operate.
  • Answer the questions customers ask before buying: price ranges, timelines and process. Pages that answer “how much does X cost in Zambia” attract buyers who are ready to act.

4. Make your website fast on mobile data

Most visitors will arrive on a phone, often on mobile data. A heavy site that takes 8 seconds to load loses them, and Google notices.

  • Compress images and use modern formats like WebP.
  • Avoid huge sliders and autoplay videos on the homepage.
  • Use good hosting rather than the cheapest shared plan.
  • Test your pages with Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool.

5. Use a local domain and the right technical setup

A .co.zm or .zm domain is a clear signal that you’re a Zambian business. Beyond that, make sure your site has:

  • a unique title and meta description on every page,
  • one clear H1 heading per page,
  • an XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console,
  • structured data (schema) describing your business, services and FAQs,
  • HTTPS, a working contact form and no broken links.

Links from other reputable websites tell Google you’re trusted. For Zambian businesses, good sources include:

  • business associations and chambers of commerce you belong to,
  • suppliers, partners and clients who can list you,
  • local news and business publications covering your launches or projects,
  • reputable business directories with consistent details.

Avoid paid link schemes. They can get your site penalised.

7. Publish helpful content consistently

Every useful article you publish is another way to be found. Write about the questions customers ask your sales team: prices, comparisons, how-tos and local regulations in your industry. Two strong articles a month beat ten thin ones.

What results to expect

Fixing your Google Business Profile and getting reviews can show results within weeks. Ranking your website for competitive searches usually takes 3 to 6 months of steady work. The businesses that win are the ones that keep going after month two.
